The subsidiary of the Salzburg Aluminium Group is the largest Austrian production company in the metal processing industry in Mexico
State reception at SAG Mexico by a business delegation led by the Austrian Federal Minister Magnus Brunner at one of the two sites of Salzburger Aluminium Group (SAG) in Mexico. Of a total of 100 domestic companies in Mexico, SAG is the largest metal-processing production company in Austrian hands, with 450 employees and a turnover of around EUR 75 million.
The delegation met with Hector Nunez, Managing Director of SAG Mexico and other members of the team and gained interesting insights into the automotive business in the region and the future prospects of SAG in Mexico. A tour through the production lines and information on the manufacturing processes rounded off the programme.
SAG Mexico: Tier1 supplier for the North American automotive industry
SAG Mexico operates at two locations with around 450 employees. One plant is located in Tlalnepantla (Estado de México). Another plant is in Monterrey (Nuevo Léon). The main customers are many large OEMs in the North American automotive industry. Products include compressed air tanks and air reservoirs for automobiles, fuel tanks for trucks and buses, and special aluminium products for vehicles. SAG Mexico generated sales of around EUR 74 million in 2022, which is around one third of the Salzburger Aluminium Group’s consolidated sales.
Mexico is Austria’s most important trading partner in Latin America
According to the Austrian Embassy in Mexico, the country is the most important trading partner in Latin America. In 2022, Austria exported goods worth 1.6 billion euros to Mexico. In total, there are currently around 100 branches of Austrian companies in Mexico with about 9,300 employees.
SAG: Global player with a local footprint in nine countries and at 10 locations
The Salzburger Aluminium Group (SAG) is an Austrian family-owned company with 1100 employees worldwide at 10 locations in Europe, Mexico, the USA and Canada. The headquarter of the company, which goes back to Salzburger Aluminium AG founded in 1898, is located in Lend/Salzburg. Other SAG locations in Austria are in Schwarzach/Pongau and Vienna. SAG is represented by subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Mexico, the USA and Canada. As the market leader for aluminium tanks for trucks, SAG is a global supplier to many well-known OEMs. Other products include lightweight components for chassis, air reservoirs, compressed air tanks and special components for the passenger car, commercial vehicle, railway and special vehicle industries. The company is the technology leader in the field of cryogenic tanks for LNG & LH2 (liquid natural gas & liquid hydrogen) and was the first company to bring rheocasting (special casting process for aluminium components) to series maturity. The export quota is over 90 percent. Suppliers include large truck and car manufacturers as well as OEMs in the railway and special vehicles sectors. The turnover of the entire group of companies in 2021 was around 207 million euros.
As part of the GreenTech Award ceremony, SAG 2023 was awarded a special prize as “Leading Innovator” for the second time. The reason for this is the company’s numerous patents for innovations that make a significant contribution to climate protection.
